The mountain of waste resulting from mass consumption of non-organic materials such as all kinds of plastics, will leave an “unbearable stamp” on the coming centuries. We must stop using and discarding plastic. Eighty percent of plastics in the ocean end up there because of plastic that flew off the land or was washed away from highways and cities and travelled by rivers to end up in the oceans all over the world. Ninety percent of waste in the oceans is made up of plastics. ENEP calculated in 2006 that 18,000 pieces of plastic are floating in or on every km² of ocean (or 46,000 pieces of plastic per mile²). Today, this might already be many times more.
