Why put coconut oil in your coffee?
‘Bulletproof coffee’ or ‘butter coffee’ is trending among people doing keto or intermittent fasting. A spoonful of coconut oil and/or ghee in your coffee provides extra energy and satiety, allowing you to go long in the morning without a heavy carbohydrate-rich breakfast. But even if you are not a modern CEO, busy bee or athlete, coconut oil in your drink can offer benefits.
MCTs in coconut oil provide energy
Coconut oil is high in medium-long fatty acid chains or MCTs (medium chain triglycerides). These healthy fats are absorbed directly by the body and can be quickly converted into energy. Moreover, they are not stored as fat. So you can think of coconut oil as a quick source of energy.
Coconut oil in your coffee: a double dose of energy
Any coffee drinker will confirm that coffee gives you a boost. Coffee is not only tasty, but is in itself a healthy drink. It contains caffeine, phytonutrients and antioxidants that help with your energy levels and focus. Adding coconut oil to coffee adds to this stimulating effect. Ideal to combat a morning dip.
Other benefits of coconut oil
Apart from an energetic feeling that coconut oil can give you when you consume it in the morning, it also makes you feel satiated. This makes you less likely to get hungry or feel like snacking.
Moreover, coconut oil has been shown to kickstart the metabolism and increase fat burning. This helps if you want to maintain your weight.
Finally, coconut oil has a strong antibacterial effect which means it supports the immune system.
One tablespoon of coconut oil per day
So it would be good to start every morning with a spoonful of coconut oil. It doesn’t sound so appetising to just swallow this, but it is tasty to put coconut oil in your coffee. The heat of the coffee gently melts the coconut oil away. Stir it briskly into your coffee or mix the whole thing in a blender and you get a creamy, silky smooth drink!
Easier is to use specific MCT oil instead of coconut oil. This is already liquid and does not need to melt in your hot drink. Bulletproof coffee often involves adding some ghee or low-salt grass-fed butter as an extra fat.
How do you make a real bulletproof coffee?
- Make a cup of coffee
- Put the coffee in a blender
- Add 1 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons of MCT oil or coconut oil
- Add 1 teaspoon of ghee or grass-fed butter
- Blend everything for 20 to 30 seconds
- Pour the creamy latte into a mug
Not a coffee drinker? Coconut oil or MCT oil is also very tasty in chocolate milk, matcha tea or your smoothie. Matcha is Japanese green tea ground into a powder.
Which coconut oil for in your coffee or other (hot) drink?
Choose organic extra virgin coconut oil or MCT oil. These are produced raw and still maximise the good nutrients of coconut oil.
Too much fat is not good either. Use no more than 1 to 3 tablespoons of coconut oil per day.
Have you never used MCT oil before? Then build it up and start with 1 teaspoon to 6 teaspoons a day.
